RIGA, June 28 (LETA) - It is clear and obvious that the shelter issue has failed under the current system in Latvia, Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (United List) told reporters Saturday following an emergency government meeting held in Latgale.

"There are 509 projects with European funding, but only one has been implemented," the prime minister said, describing the current situation.

He said that at Saturday's meeting, the government decided that the current system will be overhauled and that proposals on how to implement a unified shelter solution must be submitted within two weeks. "We will adopt a unified solution so that it can be implemented quickly, effectively, and immediately," said Kulbergs.

"The prime minister noted that we should follow the example of Ukraine, where they know how to address such issues in practice, not just "on paper." One of the standardized solutions used there in apartment buildings is third-category, prefabricated concrete shelters. People can quickly run into them and take shelter, for example, in the event of a drone attack," Kulbergs explained.

As previously reported, an emergency meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers took place on Saturday at the National Armed Forces Luznava military base in the Rezekne Municipality, the State Chancellery informed LETA.
